Enrichment

South & West

Whether your kindergartner is moving to the groove of the Sounds of Brazil, your second grader is exploring the history and architecture of the Glencoe community, or your fourth grader is doing an interpretive dance about the planets, your child has been touched by the PTO’s Cultural Arts Program at South and West Schools.  Each year, Glencoe students have the opportunity to experience the fine arts in a unique way through the various Cultural Arts events.

In each grade level, the cultural arts are tied in to the curriculum in creative and dynamic ways.  Instead of just learning some facts about our past presidents in first grade, students enjoy a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln themselves. Second graders take a walking tour of historical homes and sites in Glencoe while they learn about their community. Third graders work with the Writers’ Theatre to create short plays about Illinois history. Finally, the fourth graders expand their knowledge of the solar system by collaborating with Zephyr Dance to create “Planets in Motion.”

In addition to our core Cultural Arts events, South and West students also explore literature and the writing process through yearly author visits. They learn how important reading is to a multitude of careers through the Readers are Leaders program and they join together in a multi-grade research project for Discovery Learning. The PTO is proud to partner with our schools in developing these unique and rewarding programs for Glencoe’s children.

Expanding and enriching the students knowledge and appreciation of the fine arts through:
The fifth grade program introduces the students to the Orchestra through performances at Central School by groups such as the Northbrook Symphony and the New Trier Jazz Band.
For the 6th grade students it is to enhance their study of Ancient Civilizations through workshops with artists who will teach the students ancient art forms such as African mask making, clay stamps of Ancient Mexico and Chinese scrolls.
The 7th grade students study the civil war as part of their curriculum and then at the end of the school year they are treated to a civil war re-enactment right on the grounds of Central School.
The eighth grade cultural arts program coincides with the students study of the Holocaust as well as a tolerance program. It is based around the viewing of the award winning documentary Paper Clips. In addition to viewing the film, Linda Hooper, the Principal from Whitwell Junior High School visits to discuss the paper clips project and the making of the film.
The Central School Author program involves visits from various authors as guests speakers and is meant to enhance students’ appreciation of reading, literature , and the process of writing.
